Thank you for the kind words about this journal Lyle! We too had drifted away from riding these large scale, highly supported rides for quite a while, but this last summer especially started riding them again and enjoyed the company of other riders from all over the country. I still do love a solo tour though.
3 years agoThanks for the very entertaining journal. It certainly looks like a beautiful ride. I've done a few of these supported group rides many years ago but they don't feature in our current thinking or plans. However your depiction of the ride and your wrap up comments in the last few paragraphs may cause us to rethink! Thanks again.
3 years agoThat was the total for two of us ... $1,200 each, which included the extra charge for the tent & porter option. I would have blanched if it was $2,400 per person! But probably found a way to pay for it anyway ; - )
3 years ago$2,400 registration fee.
Was that each or was it $2,400 each.
Whatever it was a great experience.
Cattle grids - since I upgraded my touring bike tyres from 28 X 622 at 80 psi to 36 X 622 at 60 psi I just experience a rumbling sound as I cycle over the grids.
3 years agoWisconsin, where we live, is a fantastic place to bike, but we don't have anything remotely like those long, sinuous climbs you have out west. We were just agape for that whole day.
3 years agoSomehow in all my years in Oregon I’ve never made this climb, but I’ve driven it and know how amazing it is. We’ll have to make it over there some spring or fall.
3 years agoThat is absolutely the kind of "porter" I would pay for without hesitation! Excellent call.
3 years agoinspiring, but disappointing too. We’ve never ridden CO because we don’t do that well in crowds, but you almost had me when I read about the tent & porter option. I was imagining how great it would be to find a frosty Black Butte Porter waiting in front of the tent when we rolled up at the end of the dayuntil I read on.
3 years agoHey, you’re talkin’ about MY state! Can’t wait.

I have 38s at 45 psi or 40s at 40 psi (pressures for pavement) on my newest bike. I still really hate cattleguards. My method is to get a bit of speed and coast across. I'm not sure which are worse--the round ones or the square ones.
