I rode to the top of Cottonwood back in my diamond frame days. It was tough back then also . . .
The newly paved section, to Almont, does not have any shoulder, maybe 6". The Buena Vista side has a nice shoulder.

Put it on your list, Rod. I've already made a reservation for the same date in 2022. Want to join in? No SAG this time, probably not the exact same route, but a variation on the theme.
I've had a couple of people say they use Tailwind. I like that they are from Durango, I feel like I'm supporting a local.

Never pedaled Cottonwood, it has to be a real challenge, Kelly, I'm impressed!
and BTW, I mix tailwinds on the diluted side, for what it is worth.

Way to go Kelly! I know we would have been walking some of that climb. We rode Cottonwood in 2002 when we did Ride the Rockies. That was the first year they did that. We rode the opposite direction and the west side was still dirt. Nice to know it's now all paved with a decent shoulder.
3 years agoWell done today.
3 years agoGreat commentary for the non-rider today.
3 years agoI really enjoyed this entry, it reminded me of my 2015 crossing of Hoosier Pass on the Transam route. Due to my "both ends to the middle" approach, it was also in Sept when I crossed. An earlier start helps with the traffic. And I definitely remember the bumpy bike path downhill from Alma!
3 years agoI like "tailwind" too, although Judy and I seem to forget to fuel on any ride, short or long!
Enjoying your fall trip and BTW, colonoscopy results are good.

Col0rs!!!!
3 years agoI debated and took the risk . . . .
3 years agoIf she does get kicked off, which would be sad, I'd feel equally complicit.
3 years agoYou are a good detective! I hope my mentioning her doesn’t get her kicked off.
I made it through our entire summer tour without a flat. I suppose it was my turn. But, darn.
I just figured it out . . . Alison is "Pink Panniers" from the Crazyguy site.
Other than the time I was speeding down a major hill and was unable to avoid a block of wood that appeared suddenly and I got a pinch flat, every single flat tire I've gotten while on tour has been caused by those wires from exploded truck tires.
I will have to ride back the other direction and see!
We will come through here again on the colors tour. I will try to remember to look!
Thank you for the kudos, Mike. It was a long anticipated accomplishment!
