Keith Adams commented on Day 53, to McCook: Let's hope for more days like this!

The rigid schedule of a led group tour is precisely why I will never do one. Theirs may have to flex and bend to deal with Yellowstone.

What's your plan for that, or is it too soon to say?

Ha ha, now I've got 'egg on my face'.

Ha! That's actually the end of the helmet strap hanging down (thank goodness). The beard is hiding the rest of the strap.

On my first Biking Across Kansas adventure I was riding with a Kansan who explained that when you first see the water tower of a town in the distance you are about 10 to 12 miles out. It was a bit of a bummer for me, accustomed to East Coast standards, to realize that meant I had another 45 minutes to an hour to get to town.

That's one huge insect photo-bomber on your beard

Kelly Iniguez commented on Day 45, to Atchison, KANSAS: Riding is really feeling good again — even easy. And I think I'm getting picky about camping.

I agree with you totally - ride the ride that makes you happy! A good night's sleep is everything - where ever that is.

We seem to have many similar tendencies and mindsets. I wonder whether I too will adapt my thinking as you are doing, as I work my way east.

Sorry, no photo of Kayla either.

Your description was kind and vivid. I'm sure you didn't photo him, but is there a photo of Kayla? The pumpkin shaped, not loaf shaped. Another easy to visualize description!

Great meeting between you two! Over the years, I have met similar folks. Always have been wonderful.

Keith Adams commented on Day 39, to Augusta, Mo.: Back in the saddle — and neither heat nor thunderstorms nor covid nor a flat tire stays this cyclist from the swift completion of his appointed tour

"This is not a competition. If it is, I concede. I'm aiming for the participation trophy, thanks."

Amen! I may not even get that far, based on how my mini-tour this week went. But I'll wait a bit and see, before making the final decision. For now I'm home a couple days before I expected to be, licking my wounds and reconsidering whether the grand tour is really the right thing for me.

Keith Adams commented on Day 40 (13th zero day, in Augusta): Invest In rest

"granted, a sunk cost is a sunk cost and not a good reason to change future behavior"

Yep. I abandoned two pre-paid campsite reservations this week, when it became clear that I was not going to make it to the night's intended destination. I firmly believe I made the right decision, for me. I think you did, too.

Ugh. Hope you recover quickly and fully. Glad you are with friends.

Oh yeah, my other thought: so much for my rose colored glasses assumption that spending the bulk of one's time alone, either while riding or camping alone, is somehow "enough" to keep you safe. Looks like I'll be packing some extra masks as a precaution.
