Or maybe wear a helmet next time?
2 years agoFunny follow-up story:
This past Friday night, Dani was trying to throw the lock (with the rope attached) over a tree branch, and on one attempt, the lock went almost straight up in the air and slightly behind her. "RUN!" she cried. Luckily, the lock did not hit anyone or anything but the ground.
Maybe we will try a different method next time.
Loving your journal as it reminds me of my own crossing. Your decision to leave early is good - it's actually going to get even drier and more challenging as you make your way across Idaho and eastern Oregon - in fact, the heat can become quite dangerous. Carry more water than you think you need and consider getting up even earlier (I know that sounds crazy, but I was given this same advice in 2015 and was glad that I followed it). Hell's Canyon area can live up to the name.
2 years agoI'm so glad you included this pic because I failed to mention the two designated MOOSE XINGS we crossed today.

2 years agoGotta love it when 2 journals I am following cross paths and actually meet!
2 years agoI know it wasn’t funny at the time, but the bike lock story is the funniest thing I’ve read for awhile.
2 years agoI'm reliving my Transam experience (7 years ago) through your journal - I recognize most of the roadway scenery photos and find myself longing to ride this route again. Maybe someday I will. You have a lot of interesting travel remaining and I'm looking forward to reading about it.
2 years agoI’ve never heard of Alder Gulch before but this makes me want to go see what remains of it.
2 years agoIt’s refreshing to have some honest commentary about the challenges of cycling as a couple. No matter how solid your relationship there are always challenging days that test it. Sounds like a day you’ll remember,
2 years agoThanks for the info on hiker/biker sites Chris. That was exactly what I was looking for, and now I know why there's no mention of it on the NPS website.
2 years agoAs I'm due to arrive in Yellowstone in a couple weeks I'm especially interested in your experiences and impressions. We will cross before then so, assuming we actually meet on the road or in a stopover town I'll hold my questions until that happens.
2 years agoThose of us who have ridden the Transam often take pictures of the same view - I recognize so many of your pics even without reading the caption - thanks for rekindling my memories.
2 years agoBelieve it or not, the night I spent at the church in Jeffrey City in 2015 was a very scary night for me - absolutely frightening to be honest - see https://www.cycleblaze.com/journals/buddy/day-65-lander-to-jeffrey-city-wy-whos-afraid-of-a-spooky-church-3b0/ (not sure if this will work, for some reason I don't seem to be able to post a link while commenting).

Oops. I forgot that we biked 75 miles to Dubois. THAT was my longest ride in 9 years.
