No kidding! Great roads, tasty food, stellar company .. too bad we missed out!
5 years agoThank you so much, Jen. We appreciate how kind and generous you have been with your comments. The depth to which you have read our journals makes us realize our efforts have been worthwhile.
5 years agoI didn't know much about Myanmar before reading your journals, and everything you and Andrea have shared has been fascinating.
This entry was particularly valuable because it's easy to overlook the importance of simple presence and genuine interest.
As you say, "Just by showing up and talking to them gave them hope and I feel it's one of the biggest gifts I've ever given anyone."
The time that you 2 have taken to share your thoughts and experiences is also a great gift. What I've learned about your approach to travel will certainly influence my future travels. I will keep in mind WWBAAD .. What Would Bruce and Andrea Do? :0)
I don't know how many times I've overstayed my visa in Myanmar and I always have reserved a few really ratty U.S. bills for them and they always hate me for that. It's a fun game. I tell them that it's the end of my trip and that's all I have left. One uniformed immigration guy got so mad he decided to stamp naughty stamps in our passports for future immigration guys to see. I just wish the stamp was in red ink.
5 years agoVery entertaining capture of the border chaos!
Sounds like no amount of kindness and/or patience on the part of the foreigners would compensate for the absence of crisp US $ bills.
This journal is gold for someone like me who may not be adventurous enough to try a bike tour in Myanmar. Your willingness to go with the flow is admirable and certainly lead to some incredible experiences.
Have you ever thought of teaching a class on writing travel journals or on the qualities and benefits of the adventure travel mindset?
Also .. I love your description of the European tourists "blondely walking" .. yet another brilliant verbal snapshot that will have me giggling for the rest of the day.
If only it were this easy to prepare bikes for all flights!
5 years agoWhew! Always good to see a couple smiles on an aggravating day.
5 years agoPancake Kingdom, home of serendipity!
Incredible how this simple outing for guacamole evolved into such a fascinating day.
I liked the idea of hovering around the temple grounds, though.
5 years agoYes .. enough with the bucolic scenes already!
I want some photos malignant suburbs!
Ha! Remember to leave your feet in your shoes when you take them off. Please.
5 years agoThank you, Jen. I'm SO HAPPY Andrea captured this moment with the two men. I cherish this photo and experience. Your comments are gold to us, or, 'shwe' in Burmese.
5 years agoAbout your mention of the cerebral file you have of "the best photos I've ever not taken" .. glad Andrea was able to capture the image of you and the 2 guys.
I love all of the photos you share in your journals, but what is equally incredible is how well both of you capture the 'photos not taken' with your descriptions.
You both have a great talent for transporting your readers to the magical world of your travel experiences.
Yum!
