A wonderful journal about the "West (Side) Coast Story". I really enjoyed it. In 2001 my wife and me, we traveled with our recumbent tandem from Portland to San Francisco and next Fall we will come back to travel (again with the tandem) from San Francisco to Los Angeles and above all to visit all the friends we left behind after our year in Berkeley. That was in 1980.

I have really enjoyed your journal and look forward to seeing your videos..I also agree with all your takeaways. We’ve done tours in Southern Utah, New Mexico and Arizona and have enjoyed them all!
2 years agoThanks, Rich. And thanks for following along.
2 years agoRich does ride, but he wasn't up for or interested in a really long tour. We do some smaller tours together, though hills are getting harder for him and he's considering an e-bike. I'd like that, because we could ride more together.
2 years agoA great trip and a great journal! Thanks for taking us along. FWIW we agree with your takeaways from the trip. No camping, no organized tours, and shorter days are where we’ve ended up, too. To each their own, of course. 😊
2 years agoThanks again for taking us along! Rich looks like he’d be great on a bicycle. Start him off with something easy though so he doesn’t get discouraged. Maybe not Leggett Pass the first time out.
2 years agoHa! Me too. :-)
2 years agoCongratulations! I cants wait to read the wrap up. Lik Susan, I’m also curious about what comes next!
2 years agoLa Jolla is such a pretty (and upscale) location. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay. And congrats on your recent tour. Your lifestyle is amazing and I'm looking forward to following your future adventures.
2 years agoThank you Susan!
2 years agoCongratulations Amber! And special kudos for finding a workable hybrid between self-contained and ACA touring. Looking forward to learning what comes next.
2 years agoWhat a coincidence. We will be staying in La Jolla for 3 nights starting on December 21. After finishing our tour we flew back to Portland, OR and are heading out in our car to California and then Tucson, AZ to find the good weather so we can continue to bicycle and hike. It sure pays to be retired and not own a home. I’ve really enjoyed following your tour!
2 years agoOh, and since for some reason you didn’t stop on the freeway and take a photo to remember it from, here’s a reminder: https://www.cycleblaze.com/journals/2020part1/oceanside/#19512_0gzsa8r6f1u72huzcy90yozu1of
2 years agoThat freeway situation is really unforgivable. I wonder how many bike ‘incidents’ on it have occurred since Camp Pendleton closed its access. We rode through here in 2015 and went through the base (and posted signs then stated this was the only choice unless you called for a shuttle, because biking on I-5 wasn’t permitted then), but by 2020 entering the base from this end was forbidden - unless you had a permit, which was only obtainable at the other end of the base.
So we rode the freeway too. Pretty awful, but at least we didn’t have a parked car forcing us into the traffic lanes. Awful. I’d forgotten all about this, so thanks for reminding me.
Thank you, Armin. I hope that when you travel the coast again the highway is open through Big Sur. It’s one of the most awe-inspiring stretches of coastline in California, but has been closed for a while due to slides.
