40 years ago my brother and I drove across Nebraska on I-80, at night. From west to east, we were *never* out of sight of at least one radio tower warning light ahead of us. With the development of the mobile phone network I'd bet that's even more likely to be true today.
2 years agoMy wife (whose bike this originally was, before she bought a smaller version of it, and gave this one to me), informs me that the bike originally came with fenders, but they weren't effective, and she got rid of them.
I've used fenders on my old Cannondale T-400 touring bike in the past, and they *did* work well. However, I found them fiddly, especially when I had to fix a flat on the rear tire - something which seemed to happen frequently.
I've never had a flat tire on the Salsa Fargo, with its sealant-filled, super-tough tires.
Yep. I do like a tidy barn.
2 years agoInteresting. For me , this was not an especially fun or memorable day of riding on this tour. A lot of the time, what makes a day on a tour something I look back with fondness on are very minor things that probably don't come across in the journal.
I know that if I didn't have a tailwind (or, much worse, if I had a headwind) when riding the last 30-something miles to Norton, I would remember this as a tough, unpleasant day.
In any case: Thanks for reading!
Yep. They called it "Bleeding Kansas" for a reason. Of course, John Brown could equally be called a terrorist. based on his actions is Kansas and Missouri.
Last time I was in Lawrence (2021) we stayed in a hotel that had been burned during Quantrill's raid.
Missed that one, Keith. G-2 is a little skinnier though.

2 years agoI know I wasn't riding it, but this was my favorite day of your tour so far. I was amazed that a town as small as Palco could have all of those things on the little signs, PLUS two big grain elevators and a nice library. You rode through Rooster Nation and the homes of the Delmartians and the loud and proud Ringneck fans. I love such names for small town high school sports teams. And then there was Nicodemus. That town was featured in my favorite book about the Great Plains. It was called "Great Plains" by Ian Frazier.
2 years agoWow , awesome
2 years agoI won many spelling bees in my grade school days. One time I only got second place when I spelled cemetary (sic) like it sounded. Fifty-five years later, I STILL hate that word.
2 years agoI hope you weren’t confused and obeyed the constraint anyway.
2 years agoThanks. This was the day on the tour that I felt least interested in taking photos, but some did turn out alright, I think.
2 years agoYes, Kansas - -
Read about Quantrill's Raid on Lawrence in the Civil War.

For some reason recently I idly wondered if there were any Rexalls left. I guess so.
