It looks like part of a very large chess set.
2 years agoWater hasn't been an issue. I'm carrying three bottles, and there have been places to stop and buy sports drinks and soda pop during the day.
Also, I can go a lot longer than 3 or 4 hours before using up all my water.
That's probably a bad habit of mine, though, and I'm likely in a constant state of at least mild dehydration.
A much bigger issue for me has always been running out of food, and bonking.
I don't know. I guessed I should have knocked on it ;)
2 years agoI was surprised to see that so many cyclists had stayed there over the years, because I believe that for a long time, the ACA maps did not list the church as a cyclist-only accommodation. I'm pretty sure that's the case, anyway.
It's definitely not as widely known as the Sebree church hostel.
The fact that I didn't sleep well there is due to my own insomnia - no fault of setup at the church.
Is the puerta del cielo locked?

2 years agoI had missed that detail. Thanks for pointing it out!
2 years agoThanks, John.
Yes, Arcadia was a nice stop on the tour.
Wasn't too bad, actually.
2 years agoI glanced down, but I wasn't afraid ;)
This is now the third time I've ridden across the bridge on bike tours.
I wanted to cross farther south, at Brady, to see something different. But I didn't have time to work out a route there.
I hadn't actually noticed the custom paint job.
Did you see the trailer hitch ball on the back? He was proud of that - he told me that "I can haul things!"
Somehow that unabashedly DIY-by-a-kid paint job makes me smile. He's gotten the bike just the way *he* wants it. Good for him! That's the way every bike ought to be: specifically tailored to the owner's taste and be damned to anyone else's low opinion of the result.
2 years agoDid you look down through the grate on the Missouri River bridge?

I love the plume of dust trailing the vehicle. Probably wouldn't love it so much if I were riding, though.
