I think your are right - all 5 oceans are really part of one big pool of salt water.
Apparently the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea states that all of the ocean is "sea". But, the Sea of Gallilee is a freshwater lake.
I will go with "The Sea of Michigan."
They seemed too big and crunchy to be gnats - at least the east coast version of gnats I've seen all my life. This would make an audible ping when they hit my helmet. Seems like WI has many versions of black flies, but these didn't really seem to bite. Midge is an interesting name for a pest, I'll stick with that!
5 months agoI'm not an insect expert, but I think what you call midges, I call gnats. I've experienced such infestations on a couple bike trips along the Mississippi River in Wisconsin and Iowa.
5 months agoI agree, lakes this big should be called "oceans." On the other hand, oceans contain salt. I like the fresh water better.

A couple years ago I did a tour across Wisconsin and came to the same conclusion as you did about the cycle-friendliness of both Madison and Milwaukee. I also very much enjoyed the Glacial Drumlin Trail and normally I'm not that much of a trail guy.
5 months agoAnd, going back to my earlier comment, if those bugs were crunchy and were pinging on your helmet, you're right--they weren't gnats.
