I’m madly trying to catch up on your journal and others but I have to say: RWGPS errs in the other direction too. We’ve ridden roads expecting them to be unpaved and they weren’t, nor was the asphalt new.
2 years agoIt’s quite remarkable. I expected to enjoy it since we were in the vicinity fifteen years ago, but I’m still surprised at how captivating it is.
2 years agoI was sure it must have been a stopover for you. I took the signpost shot with you in mind.
2 years agoThanks, Polly. The explanation surprises me though, because I never thought of these walls being two sided before - except in the plane geometry sense, that is. I’m going to have to look at them lengthwise.
2 years agoKirkby Stephen was one of our stopover towns on our C2C walk in 2008. Our walk went from Shap to Orton and then Kirkby Stephen. The next day it was on to Keld. Some of the finest walking days we have ever done. Thanks for the memories. Enjoy!
2 years agoI'm really loving this countryside and your photos of it. Thank you both.
2 years agoFascinating. But what are the ones on top all about? I've never seen a stone wall with flat stones on top set at an angle.
2 years agoI appreciate, as do all of your readers I would guess, that you show us details like this. Very educational for those of us who have never been to these places.

2 years agoTough choice there. You have heard about the Dutch Alps though?
2 years agoYes, too many view-blockers. I can't believe you purposely took this path. You need to get back up into those beautiful highlands with neverending views.
2 years agoCan't until you get to the Lakes District. I expect it to be stunning in the morning light. You've put another future trip on our list. Maybe back to the British Isles on our next tour. Or. Maybe something a little flatter, like the Netherlands.
2 years agoI think you're right. (There are some round there which are important enough to be listed: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1007100?section=official-list-entry )
2 years agoThanks. I prefer to get out early! We will be doing more of this as it gets hotter.

You’re right, and we’ve had like experiences ourselves. To be fair I should note the unexpectedly good as well as the unexpectedly poor. I feel bad.
