I hadn't scrolled down far enough to read your caption... the disappearing shoulder was the very first thing I noticed
6 years agoI think the difference in scale between Walmart and Dollar General is significant. Walmart often builds a supercenter outside of a town with existing loval businesses. The local stores can't compete on price and some go out of business. There's a downward spiral as fewer people come down town because there are fewer shops downtown.
Dollar General stores are small enough to pop up in places that don't have existing shopping option beyond maybe a single gas station / convenience store. That may be bad news if you are the guy who owns the gas station, but it's good news for just about everyone else.
Enough with trying to sound even handed. The real reason I like Dollar General? They all have bathrooms, and they let cyclists use them. That's important in Pennsylvania, where even stores that serve food often don't have public bathrooms, and send their customers down the street to pee and wash their hands at Dollar General!
Well now that you mention the wolf, I can see it. Prior to that I thought it was just a hand pointing a pistol directly at you...

I guessed that's what they were. Fortunately, I've never lived anyplace such a thing would be needed!
6 years agoSo the short answer is Fire and Ice???
6 years agoThe roof adornments are to keep the snow from sliding off. Anyone from FL has never seen them.
The tubes under the gas pump canopy are heat sensors used to detect a fire.
They probably have something similar in FL.
Jerry says that "tabs" on the roof are to keep ice/snow from falling on people.
6 years agoNice macro shot of a hickory tussock moth caterpillar. Cute, but be careful because the hairs can cause a serious allergic reaction in some people.

I know little about mushrooms... What little I know leads me to avoid eating most of them because of the vast number of highly toxic species, some of which can kill after consuming less than a teaspoon full. And you will not know you are about to die for a couple days, and there is no antidote. Look up death cap mushroom.
Oh, and to add confusion, fungi are extremely variable in appearance, and even long-time experts have consumed fatal mushrooms.
The first rule of wild edibles is:
----When in doubt, DON'T----
Io moth! Juvenile, of course. Beware! Those Christmas trees are stinging bristles!

Alain - I must admit ignorance about Rome Apples, except for having enjoyed more than a few. They are my 2nd favorite apples right after Cortlands. Sorry I cannot be more help.

I was impressed with the roads in northwest Pennsylvania. They were well marked with cycling route numbers and had excellent shoulders.
