It could be, but my bet is that it’s another laughing gull. Notice how dark its mantle is, for one thing. It would be easier if you saw it in flight.
1 year agoYup. This and the above bird are the same species, I think.
1 year agoLooks like it to me
1 year agoMight be a gull-billed tern

Maybe laughing gull? There about half a dozen gulls with black heads and gray backs listed for Mexico, but this is the only one with a range that includes Yucatan.

Funny guy - looks more like a mirabilis prostrata in the link
1 year agoThis gull looks like maybe an immature black-legged kittiwake

Did you notice.. he has a bad leg!
1 year agoI’ll butt in here. They’re typical if you live in Mexico, but this isn’t the one you’ll see up north. This is a Tropical Mockingbird, and ours is the Northern Mockingbird. They’re very similar though - same general look and behavior, and both great songsters.

Beautiful picture! I wonder if we will see any of these in the summer.
You two are very memorable!
1 year agoIs this a 'Typical' Mockingbird?
1 year agoGreat shot! The laugh’s on you though. It’s an osprey, the same species we see in the north in the summer. The ones that nest on Sauvie Island in Portland start arriving in about late March, I think - about exactly when the sandhill cranes move north to their nesting sight. Watch for them when you get home.
1 year agoOsprey. The laughing falcon’s mask is wider and covers the cheeks. Also, I believe ospreys are larger.

Hey, ask and you shall receive! Here’s a photo of them in flight! Laughing gulls. If they were terns, they’d have more slender, almost scimitar-shaped wings.
