Sorry to hear The Pickled Onion is off the list - it's been a while since we were there. We did end up staying in some pretty strange places on that trip, but the ruins were sure worth the effort!

I'm glad you are heading back to the Yucatan. There really is so much to discover if you can get the accommodation figured out. I've used airbnb a few times in the area to find something suitable (affordable).

Just outside Muna is el mirador which offers basic accommodation. I've never stayed but I've been eyeing it up for some time now. It's only 14km from Uxmal. Actually, is this near where Dodie crashed?

Dodie just checked out options near Uxmal on booking.com, and The Pickled Onion is waaay beyond our price point. We generally look for accommodation about 1/2 or less their cost and there seem to be other less costly nearby options . Somehow paying so much for a place to sleep doesn't appeal to us. We seem to border on being tightfisted!

I hope you make it to The Pickled Onion, which is a short distance from Uxmal. We loved it and the owner, Valerie Pickle is a delight!

My record cold is -21 for just under 2 miles... Not going to do that again! Since retiring, my limit is -5 using hand warmer packets under 4 layers of gloves/mittens. My terrifying face mask goes on below 35 degrees.

Yes, we also find 60 degrees (16 to us) to be the comfort threshold. But we do say we can operate at 10 if necessary, or even 6. I have poor circulation, and a 10 or below I end up with my hands in my armpits. It's hard to cycle like that, of course.

We hope we will not have any delays or cancellations to report. But we also seem to have a crash every third trip and we've already had two uneventful ones in 2022. The pattern is going to change, though!

There is some vague logic to that a la carte pricing, though of course not for the ridiculous buy a seat example. However we still hate that system. For example, with hotel rooms we always like the "breakfast included" even when there is an option to buy breakfast separately. We just do not like being nickel and dimed. At this season, remember Scrooge in A Christmas Carol: “More bread,” Scrooge demands of the waiter as he mops up his plate. “Ha’penny extra, sir,” says the waiter. “No more bread,” frowns Scrooge. That's us!

Unfortunately Max was not on duty when we came, and no one else in the shop knows what magic he is doing. He did write in the notes that he copied the setup from Dodie's bike over to mine, but how did he originally figure out Dodie's? From the meagre clues it appears that my torque sensor was working properly, meaning it did not get screwed up by the bottom bracket having unscrewed in England. Still, the bike was acting like it had a cadence and not torque sensor when it would take off for two seconds when first pedaled. I tried looking at some Bafang setup software, but could not answer any of my questions from it. Next time I see Max I will back him into a corner and try to learn more. There is no sense trying to buy the dongle and software and to learn all about this, because this will not (better not!) happen again.

We feel a little weird getting ready to fight our way down to Cancun, while the news reports that Canadians are still there, trying to get here, and getting no information from Sunwing.

No doubt there is gear that can make snow cycling more feasible. For example, I have the book "Cycling Home From Siberia" by Rob Lilwall, and he seemed to do it. And then Peyman and Matilda of Nomad's Trails on Youtube cycled to the Arctic Circle in Finland https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miyexAcvIAs
These people seemed to use more guts than special tires, though.

Hey Steve - what an idiot he was! We've never felt so lucky! With this new no fault insurance, we felt left out of the loop. Not sure if the fella was charged or ticketed or what. Hopefully he's changed his ways

Further to my point above...
I can understand the need to maximize the profit since this is a business' primary goal. What is appalling to me is their lack of communication in general, whether to communicate with a person when organizing a ticket or to passengers when a crisis of some sort happens and they all throw up their arms and disappear. They seem to be inept at even saying, "I'm sorry this is happening, and we're not sure what we can do but please monitor airlinecommunication dot com and we will keep you posted."

With respect to two seats being more than double the price of a single seat...
Airlines price seats in 'buckets' of different price-points; and, when one purchases more than one seat, the price will be at the highest price available. So, if cheapest bucket price-point only has one more seat left but you are buying two seats, the second seat will be from a higher price-point bucket, thus the cost to you will be twice the higher price point. Nice, eh?
Airline pricing is nothing to do with being nice (surprise!) but is a branch of mathematics known as Operations Research which can be set up to maximize profits. It is a fascinating topic but does not make for 'fun' for the passenger.

Did they reveal what had failed / needed correction on the e-assist unit? If so, is it something that you might be able to pass along to shops elsewhere should you (let's hope NOT) find yourself again in need at some future date?
