Yup, it is a Great Kiskadee! Good call!

I read somewhere that dragon fruit get attached to trees for support. They usually grow in the canopy of trees. My brother in HI has one way too high to harvest growing in his huge mango tree.

In college at AZ State U, my friends and I squeezed juice from these (very seedy and very sour) fruits. We called it "go juice" because on a long trip, if we got a bit drowsy, a sip and we were ready to go!

I’ve never heard of the social flycatcher, which we don’t have further north - but it looks like it’s a challenge distinguishing them from kiskadees, even for experienced birders. Their color patterns are very similar. The key differences are apparently size (kiskadees are larger), and especially bill size - social flycatchers have fairly short bills. You can’t really tell from this photo, but it looks like a pretty stubby bill to me. Try to get a profile shot next time.

Good finding! The reference says the fruits that will follow those flowers are used to make sweets, and the wood can be used for veneers, etc.

p.s. Botanical note - yesterday we got a drink called Chaya, which is made from pineapple and orange juice plus an extract or puree of the chaya plant. The restaurant guy patiently explained this to me, but I now see this is a common local recipe.

Our guide book "Top Ten Cancun and the Yucatan" describes Merida as "languidly tropical" with "unhurried street life" and houses with "deliciously shady palm filled patios". But I found it hot and frantic, with heavy traffic in many spots and many shabby streets. Is this a case of the three blind men describing an elephant?

Uxmal is really nice! It turns out that although we did come down a steep hill to get here, it was not "Dodie's hill". We know where that is now, but do not intend to go back!

Some species of paper wasp (family Vespidae) nest. Lots of them in the tropics.

Oh oh I am not so sure there are raisins in them! But surely cinnamon - not found in France, for instance.

We are heading straight for Uxmal, this time to hopefully visit the ruins, and hopefully to not revisit the Merida hospital like we did last year!
