Was this shot through a window or other vaguely reflective surface? There are some odd- and ever-so-slightly-jarring - lighting effects around the tower and the trees on the left. It could be digital noise or some quirk of how the camera recorded and compressed the image, I suppose.

How on earth does anyone even think of decor such as that, let alone plan and execute it?

It's not often that adjectives like "slender" or "sparing" come to mind when I see stone structures, but from this angle at least they seem appropriate here.
