John Pescatore commented on Badlands National Park

Great shots of the Badlands, Janet! I camped there on a cross country car trip back in 1977 - doesn't look like anything has changed a bit, which is a good thing!

I believe anything can happen here the way the sky changes minute to minute. We started out riding into big billowy clouds and thought for sure we'd get wet but it never happened today. We were so lucky!

We had fun touring the Badlands by car years ago. We were in Wall the first weekend of June in the late 90's and it snowed three inches overnight. We were so surprised when we woke up. Glad we weren't cycling then!

Hi Nancy!
I see what you are talking about on the map! Thanks for the tips. We ride into Mountain time tomorrow so we gain an hour which will help with an early wake up on Friday to have lots of time in the Badlands! We are having such a great time. So glad you were there to tell us about this way to go! Hope you two are getting some riding in.

Whenever we went on the route you took today, we had ferocious headwinds, so it would make sense that you had something like a tailwind. I think there have not been trains on those tracks for quite awhile. We never saw any trains. Tomorrow's ride will be similar to today's. If you need a rest area before reaching Kadoka there is one on the right along the frontage road heading west. It is a rest area for the interstate, but there was always a hole in the fence to access it from the frontage road. Also, you could take a break at the "1880 town." It is near Belvedere and you have to go under the highway to the right to reach it. It's just past the interstate. The Badlands are coming!

That makes sense! Couldn't imagine the whole field just wasted!

Either the farmer will wait for some hot sunny days and turn the hay until it dries and then bale it, or more likely will turn the damp stuff into silage.

We had to walk over 2 places where the water had left dirt on the trail after that big storm yesterday. Soon after we crossed the area two fellows in a truck with shovels in the back came up the trail to clear off the mess.
