Fireweed is my very favorite flower.
4 months agoComma butterfly. There are about 4 species in that area, all look similar and all are quite variable, but the fine photo settles it for me to be a green comma. Not being a lepidopterist, and not living in the area, my ID is suspect.

What scenery! Would love to see that in person some day.
7 months agoRight time of day, right place. This ridge is extremely photogenic if the conditions are good.

7 months agoCongratulations on 42! My wife and I just celebrated our 42nd last week as well.
7 months agoThank you, Larry, for the explanation. I can see why you need to control the cottonwoods in your area. We live in the southern interior of British Columbia near a lake with many cottonwood trees around. Since there is usually plenty of water and the ground doesn't freeze deeply, they don't seem to cause problems here.
7 months agoProbably the biggest issue is when they shed their seed pods mid-late June for about 2-3 weeks. The other big issue we deal with it is our ground remains frozen a short distance underground so the root systems don’t go down but rather outward. By doing so, the cottonwoods tend to grab all the available water and any other trees, grass, etc. slowly starve. Most cottonwoods only last for about 10-12 years before they also rot from the inside out which causes issues with downed trees, power lines, and when close enough, house damage.
7 months agoJust wondering what the problem is with cottonwood trees?
7 months agoNever been a fan of riding in the rain although I’ve done it far too many times. I’ve been very impressed with the Trident Half Pints and the granddaughters have been enjoying the riding a lot. I guess they will learn to ride a two wheel bike eventually but who knows.
Early riding to beat the heat … never an Alaskan experience by any means. Looking forward to following along on your upcoming trip. We have to wait until October this year for a fall adventure.
70 degrees is a fine temperature! Tomorrow is 55 degrees and raining at home. I've been looking at the average temperature for several locations on our summer tour. It doesn't look terribly promising. 55 degrees on 6/16 in Babb, MT - and raining! Lots of rain in Babb (if the forecast is correct). I'm wondering if I should bring capris, or stick with tights for the entire trip. I'm in Tucson for a one week visit - I'm out the door at ~6 AM to beat the heat. It's quite a contrast. Enjoy those grandkids - I sent a link to our son of the trike you have for them. Our granddaughter is barely one year old. She has a Strider to grow into. I've said I would buy one of the kid size trikes, but she needs to grow a couple more years.
8 months agoMy husband’s bunk mate at Asilomar State Beach was a ranger in Denali for many years. Sadly we never ventured this far north to see them. Hi Walt and Candy! :)
9 months agoWe had a three day storm in Colorado this weekend. Happily, only rain at our elevation - but the mountains got over a foot of snow. You are correct, anything can happen with springtime in the mountains!

Cycling every day for an entire year is a serious goal. What is your minimum daily mileage? Dave VanGundy rides every day in the month of May (IDK why, but he's done that for a few years). He says by the end of the month, he's ready for a day off!
