M surprised to realize we’ve never stayed over in Serpa. We stopped for lunch there our first time through but didn’t really look around. We’ll have to go back.

Hi Diederik - yes we did make it to Serpa. A nice ride on the highway which did not have much traffic. It wasn’t a very exciting ride but we did like the terrain of rolling hills for riding. We had a good tour of the castle today which was really quite interesting. Great to meet you. Think we will likely head for Beja tomorrow which will be a short ride.

Hi, Dutch guy here :)

Did you end up in Serpa or choose another destination? Hope you had a pleasant ride, i really did.

Have a good Europe7, and try to not skip Holland in nr8.

Yes it is. There was another one adjacent to the castle as well as one featured in the lobby of our hotel where you could look down on it.

Reminds me of the time a french couple in a camper van pulled over as we were slogging up a long steep climb to Enna, Sicily in 30+ heat and pulled out a huge canteen of water, then proceeded to fill up our bottles. We had just polished off the last precious drops and were parched. Angels in the nick of time.

Is that an archaeological site next to the cemetery?

We had lunch at Alcoutim on our way to Mertola years ago. Such a beautiful, evocative spot looking across the river at Spain. I’ve wanted to go back and stay there ever since. Like you, I’ve wondered about that ferry.

I am trying to figure out how to achieve that going uphill. Obviously more training is needed. And perhaps a full body transplant!! They weren’t as bad today which was great.

Isn’t it a fabulous book? I plan to read it again when I get home. I follow Kate Harris on Instagram. Such a philosopher. I don’t remember the quote about how artificial borders are but remember enough to be really thinking about it last night, looking at Spain across the river.

It has been fabulous. We are hoping to complete the Alentejo loop we have planned and complete the circuit back to Lisbon. We have a very days there, for bike packing and a wee bit of shopping for me. I find these last weeks of a tour bittersweet. I love home, but am so happy here in the warmth.

I am loving the weather. I am a real heat seeker so this weather suits me, although 33°C was starting to feel very warm! We are already talking about a return next fall.
