And I'm not very good at birds, so yeah, I first looked up dublin. Damned autocorrect!

Right. And it’s definitely not a Dublin like I said the first time, because you’re not in Ireland.

I'm thinking dunlin because nonbreeding sanderlings are pale gray and this one is not.

Well, Bill, my husband has his degrees in botany, biology, geology and zoology. To which he did start out on the nature hikes ( circa 1968) but ended up using the others at the end as a water/wastewater engineer.
( and yes, at the end is meant as a pun…but it’s all relative..) ;)

Nice recap of your Portugal trip. The food looked great and your bibs/aprons looked even better. Speaking as a fellow beer and coffee snob, cheers!

I’ve had an idea percolating since 2019 or so of riding from Biarritz to Porto and might develop it in the near future, though starting from Bilbao as we just rode the Spanish coast North of there this past spring. Your journal is now added to my research list.

On 2013 we rode our bikes from London to Lisbon. The section from Santiago to Lisbon was of course al through Northern Portugal we kept fairly near the coast and it was a really great ride. The journal is here on Cycleblaze

Yeah, me too, and I retired in 2008!

I actually got a Zoology degree from AZ State, but ended up in explosives safety as a career. Ideally, I wished I could have given nature hikes.

Bill, I really appreciate your research. Perhaps in another life I might have been a botanist of some sort, or maybe a geologist... Here I am retired, and I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!

Glad you enjoy them! There are a few ideas percolating but no definite plans yet.

Interesting that it's so different from the invasive plant we call Japanese knotweed in BC (Reynoutria japonica).

That seems to be it. Native to tropical rain forests, apparently, so no wonder I haven't seen anything like them before.

The plantations we've seen always have tall, skinny trees. They just look so short compared to the logs we see on trucks at home, where standard lengths are 13, 11, and 8 metres (I just looked that up). The logs on that rail car are maybe 4 metres.
