What a sad thing but what a beautiful remembrance. I wish I had met Gay. Gay knew we cyclists were all out there on the road with him and it was a matter of time before our paths crossed and we would meet. I have come to know the cycling community to be a special group of people and Gay epitomized the best of that community. We can strive to be as good and generous as he was.
1 year ago❣️ A lovely tribute on so many levels.
1 year agoThanks for writing this beautiful piece about Gay. I never got to meet him and had always expected I would. He lives so large in all of your stories from your tour. I will be holding Denise in my heart.
1 year agoThat's a very moving tribute to a good friend. We'll lift a glass to Gay and all the friends we have met and have yet to meet on the road.
1 year agoThat's all Jen's brilliance!!
2 years agoPeg Bundy:Bison :: Marlo Thomas:buffalo = brilliant comparison.

2 years agoGreat story about springing into action to save "Dick's" life. Interestingly, only four years after your post, those ZZ Top beards seem to be everywhere.
2 years agoAnother "Straight Story" fan here, and that's not only because I grew up in an Iowa town about 20 miles from the big hill where Alvin Straight's lawnmower broke down.
2 years agoThat would be weird, wouldn't it?

That's interesting that you prioritized touring. In retrospect, we are certainly both glad to be retired and to have done the tour, but I'd probably wait a couple of months before starting if I had it to do over again. Just to let the idea of retirement sink in.
I have relatives in Kansas City, MO too. I was hoping for more pictures to see if we have relatives in common, since we appear to have goofiness in common.
2 years agoHah! I just saw Scott's comment and wasn't sure if he made a typo, or if he doesn't know the difference between an animated green TV character and the world's most famous skipper of a boat taking a three-hour tour gone wrong.
Before noticing that, my main reason for this comment was that I, too, made a bike tour my first priority after an early retirement.
As promised, here I am, ready to re-read and provide commentary on "Undaunted Porridge." I have my copy of "Undaunted Courage" in hand for literary and historical comparison.
Like you, I'm a big fan of verbs. I'm an even bigger fan of adverbs. When I objectively and critically and frequently look at my journals, it immediately becomes apparent that I seriously and indiscriminately overuse adverbs.
So sad to write, but it's a beautiful tribute.
