Ahhhhhhhh that's much more relaxing than stressing over Amtrak's dysfunctional "service" model or mislaid boxes, isn't it?
1 year agoI've always been a fan of the western lodge style architecture and decor. Those huge windows really do it for me, too.
1 year agoYeesh what a nightmare. Glad it worked out okay, but who needs that kind of stress, especially when you're supposed to be going on *vacation* for cripes' sake?
1 year agoCurious about the path to putting the CF HED wheel on the bike. I see one of those trips-spoke wheels and my mind goes to time trials.
1 year agoWe learned from experienced travelers on the train that delays are routine because the freight trains own the tracks, so Amtrak always has to wait for them. That's not something you have to deal with in Europe fortunately.
1 year agoWhat an appalling story. There are so many reasons we prefer biking in Europe, but the availability of a function train system is high on the list.
1 year agoYou certainly look ready. Good luck!
1 year agoI’ve wanted to ride Wawawai Road down to or up from the Snake ever since I first heard of it. One of these years.
1 year agoI read that the snake kill there was excessive before they started closing the road twice a year. There was much research and deliberation before I felt ok about camping a few miles away.
1 year agoNo one has commented on the road being closed for snake migration?! The bike path in Colorado between Carbondale and Aspen is closed every fall/winter for deer, elk, bear, etc. I've never heard of a snake closure before!
1 year agoOoooh. Very nice.
1 year agoIt's UHMWPE - Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. I do wonder about it. Hoping that having all the food inside the Opsak smell-proof bags that go into it will avoid attracting them in the first place.
1 year agoBrilliant! I found something like that in the rope box. It's much smaller and lighter than the nylon rope. Thanks Keith.
1 year ago"Another issue is the very wet cotton rope that we used to hang the bear bag."
I carried a 100-foot length of synthetic and reflective tent guyline last summer. It made a great way to hang food stowed in a pannier (I'd not heard of the odor-proof / bear-resistant bags you mentioned).
The guyline is lightweight, packs small, and is easily tied off and untied.
They're light, the carbon matches my carbon frame bike, and they don't go out of true. No problems at all with it on the tour.
