I guess it's hard to tell because of the flash. It's a pesto chicken and it was great!
5 years agoScott, you guys would love it here and there are Americans here so I'm pretty sure you can get here on some pretext or another.
5 years agoAh! That's an interesting thought!
5 years agoBooking doesn't like me here in Cuba for some reason, lol! We just showed up at the one Casa and got a room and at the hotel we are currently at. We are winging it but it seems to be fine so far.
5 years ago"Casa particular" translates as literally "private house". Is that more like what we would call "B&B", Guest House, or Airbnb? Maybe it's hard to tell the difference, but some key things are whether or what food is offered, and if there is staff or family always on site. Your photo has a lighted sign that says "Bar", which seems pretty official.
How will you be finding the places you will be staying at?
If they are on booking.com, then that is a sure bet they have wifi, anyway!
I skimmed an article by "Two Scots Abroad" about wifi in Cuba. Here is the link, though now you probably don't want to use scarce wifi time to read it. The takeaway is that there are a few parks they list, with wifi, and availability at ETECSA communications centres. In all cases you have to pay for an access card, same with hotels. An experiment to offer mobile SIM based data ended in 2018, so they rule out looking for that.

I see that Havana map on your table - looks good - keep it for us!
Too bad you did not bring offline mapping for your smartphone. For Apple people talk about Galileo and for Android - OSMAND+, which is what we use. I will check to see if OSMAND actually covers Cuba
errm, what is this dish comprised of?
5 years agoCongrats so far, and thanks for taking us along! I can’t wait to see Cuba. We’ve thought for years of going there ourselves, but of course it’s a different story for us backwards folks here down south. Could you adopt us?
5 years agoI think they may be orchids, growing in some kind of coconut husk-like thing.
5 years agoYour guess is as god as mine or probably better. We won't be able to do a lot of looking up and other stuff unless we are at a hotel. It's not bad once you figure out the wifi thing. $1 for 1 hour
5 years agoLooks like some sort of bromeliad maybe?
5 years agoStill loving your blog! Regarding photos while snorkeling -- we borrowed my son-in-law's GoPro a few years ago for a Hawaii trip, and we were able to take still shots as jpg files while snorkeling. Thought I might be remembering wrong, but I just found them in my computer files. Continue to have a wonderful time!
5 years agoSorry, Steve! Maybe we will find some magical place where the wifi is fast (lol!). We will be thinking of you and Dodie gearing up for your next outing - it should be pretty exciting for her to try out those new knees!
5 years agoI was looking at some sites about wifi and/or mobile data in Cuba and it seems you are right - it's going to be tough. That means we have to accept the loss of a favourite daily read. 5 weeks? Yikes!

As fellow Vancouver Islanders and cyclists, we have enjoyed your blog immensely. We are particularly interested in your Cuba trip as many others have had very mixed reports about cycling there. It sounds like you are off to a great start!
