Good eye, Scott. We've yet to see these on our tours in Michigan. Are you going through Holland, MI? There's a lot of Dutch influence there with working windmills and a nice lighthouse (red!). How about Battle Creek? There is a nice thought provoking sculpture in a park near the river depicting the Underground Railroad.
3 years agoOf course not. Stag sparrows, obviously.
3 years agoCould be, but this one seems so fleshy and bulbous. If it’s a sulfur mushroom, aka Chicken of the Woods, it’s supposedly good eating. I’m not biting though.
3 years agoHi,
Looks like a sulfur ‘shroom to me. Supposedly edible, but I’m allergic to them. There are actually a number of species of these, but it takes an expert to tell them apart. My old lab mate and friend Tom Volk of UW/Lacrosse did a monograph on these, and he would be the one to ask, but I suspect he would want to get the specimen in his hands before rendering an opinion.
Cheers,
Keith
That looks a lot like a Thai crematory.
3 years agoWhat are those birds they're trampling? They can't be cowbirds.
3 years agoThey're blooming here in Portland right now, very fragrant.
3 years agoCorrect. Looks healthier than the one in the street divider in front of our house.

Small but conclusive. Sliders and painteds have completely different patterns.
3 years agoI believe you. That’s a lot of inference from small evidence.
3 years agoWe’ve been thinking about them (and you), counting our blessings.
3 years agoNo, we’re still waiting for you. In the meantime you’re free to use the jacuzzi. You can even go first.
3 years agoIsn’t that surprising though? Rachael and I both did a double take on those stilts.
3 years agoWhat a photo!
And how interesting that those 2 sticks are positioned so they appear to be weird protrusions from the heron's legs.
Any relation to Surly Bikes, which is based in MN?
