More Ookie than Kookie…
1 year agoThat’s a big Nope from me too 😳
1 year agoHope thats the only one you have to use. And not the only one you have… 😬
1 year agoWe used to cross over at Cornwall to visit our dog breeder in Alexandria. Lots of slow country roads, reservations and a few penitentiaries. Didn’t see too much weed, that must be a new thing. We cross over closer to Montreal now, more highway time, less sketchy…
1 year agoOften canal systems failed due to the development of railroads, but the Erie Canal lasted longer than most, probably because they deepened and widened it enough to handle large scale bulk carriers of grain and coal, and it was very cheap transport. The canal paths, designed for horses hauling huge barges, make great bike paths.
1 year agoThey are eager to cut government handouts, until you mention Social Security and Medicare, both highly socialist. Many retirees don’t seem to understand how these programs work.
1 year agoEmpire apples always came from NY state, and they have some other unique varieties, all which can handle extreme low temperatures in the winter. The orchards can be huge, way bigger than anything in Maine.
1 year agoKOA, or Kampgrounds of America, will have one token tent site and 60 spaces for trailers and RVs, with full hookups of electric, water, sewer, and even cable. The sites are basically unaffordable for tenters.
Winslow Park here in Freeport reserves many waterfront sites just for tenters, which is quite unusual these days. They also have no hookups, which keeps the RVs limited.
That keeps the tourists away, and so no campgrounds. I camped in large cemeteries a couple times. Go the back and it’s easy to disappear. But the cops will never send you there as a camping place. The depressions left by collapsing caskets are quite comfy.
1 year agoI like the leather aprons. Saves a lot of wear on clothing.
1 year agoThe Amish are incredibly hard working. There are a couple communities in Maine now, a large one in Aroostook up north. The sons are given land to start their own farms. In order to have a viable farm, it has to be 50 acres or more, especially with draft horses and other animals that eat a lot. Therefore the heads of families look for very large tracts of land of several hundred acres, so they can split land off for the sons. Aroostook has very large tracts of good farmland relatively cheap, and apparently so does upper New York State.
1 year agoThere must be horses around somewhere. I like the wood rack hanging from the ceiling. Good for easy access to different sizes.
1 year agoGreat caption, especially considering that the site was used as a prisoner of war camp to house German soldiers during World War II. I'm sure the irony would be lost on those who put up the sign.
1 year ago87 miles! Not bad for an old man.

Jim, Great pics, and color comentary. Wish I were on the journey. If you go through Geneva on the Lake, look up Lindheart's Lodge. Spent a week there each summer when in was growing up in Farrell PA. Travel safely and keep on rolling down the road. ____John
