I love those preztels..I recall in 1990 of buying a big pretzel and a huge bottle of beer and walking around forever with that beer in a paper bag eating the pretzel. Here, a pretzel like that would set you back $8 USD.
5 years agoCool story Len! A good friend of mine, Jim Tarlton, also ran in the same Marathon. He’s been known to like a few beers to so you may well have been partying with him at the Gate!
5 years agoIn 1990 I ran the Berlin Marathon; it was the first year that the marathon went through into the previous East Berlin through the Brandenburg Gate. I recall vividly, couple days before near the Spree River that long long sections of the Berlin Wall was still standing. People were "renting hammer/chisel" for 5 deutschemark to chisel away as much of the Berlin Wall as you could and take home. Yeh I did that...ended up with more skin off my damn thumb than the amount of Wall I took home but I did take numerous pieces home which I still have and on my fireplace mantel. Had a good race in the marathon finishing on the Kurfürstendamm. Stayed 4 more days to attend the mass party in front of the Brandenburg Gate; I don't think I even paid for any of the beer I drank that night! One hell of a party!

5 years agoYeah, the best was when they would inevitably break when partially open.
If you noticed, these ones are super classy with the vinyl covering that matches the roof!

5 years agoI was thinking of a classic Frank Zappa tune originally 'cause Vaclav Havel (among many other Czech's at the time) was a huge FZ fan. Havel even made him a special Ambassador to the west for Culture.
However, hearing the VE playing while looking at Warhol's stuff and learning more about his life, won them SOTD. Who knows, maybe Rock & Roll was composed at the Factory with Andy puttering away in the background?
You see why we have many of these in various Meuse clan households. Just made an account today and was greeted by this nice picture. Looks a bit wet so far by still good reading. Keep writing. Thx

In 1990, all along the existing Wall and the River area, there were hundreds of people selling all kinds of Russian military clothing, hardware, etc. Just hundreds of people selling stuff. I recall that I bought a beautiful Russian knife (still have it somewhere).
