Oh, good! I was afraid we weren’t going to see a picture of those tree tunnels.
70 miles!!
You gonna be more than a “yupper” after 70 miles!!!
3 years agoThey crossed the country 14 times? That’s really amazing.
3 years agoKerry and I rode this route about seven years ago west to east. We were still touring on our single bikes then. I thought is was a beautiful ride and I agree with you completely about Mackinac Island. I'm glad I went, but I don't have any desire to go again. The coastal ride between Naubinway and St. Ignace is great though. The lake views are gorgeous. Enjoy the UP!

3 years agoI have been to that drive in. It is a fun nostalgia experience. I think that they still have the old speakers that hang on your drivers side window, but I used the radio for the movie sound.
3 years agoYou said to bring our winter clothes. I am wearing my warm jacket as we speak! Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and 71. I’m looking forward to it!

More than I can tell...
Bill,
You have led a widely varied life!

Depends on the size of the barn. (or whatever you are protecting)
20 feet max spacing is standard, but taller rods can be farther. It has been decades since I did lightning protection system inspections.

I did not look that closely. I don't think I've seen barn lightning rods before . . . just on one other barn today.
3 years agoI saw one other barn with lightning rods. It also had four. I wonder if that is 'the' number, or if it depends on the barn.

I had to laugh at your description of waving at drivers and they don't wave back. When I'm touring I wave all the time. I've seen great wave-back rates in the western states and midwestern states and especially in the southern states. But the further you get to the northeast, the fewer waves you'll get. It starts in Michigan and gets worse in Ohio. Massachusetts? Forget it!
3 years agoYou're getting into the best part of the U.P. now. In my mind, Lake Superior is vastly superior to Lake Michigan. But yeah, there are too many trees (view-blockers.) I'm still waiting to see your reaction to your first real U.P. pasty. I hope so much that you like them. (Hint: Don't put gravy on it.)
If you need a refresher course on pasties, I've created my own cooking blog since I got kicked off Topicwise. Here's the pasty article:

Have fun in upper Michigan. I hope you make it to my old stomping grounds in Marquette.
