Surprised bill didn’t hazard a guess here. A black kite maybe.
3 months agoI remember this too, of course. And don’t you have diffeeent footwear yet again for the bathroom?
3 months agoThis route across looks more or less like what I think we had planned. God, I would have loved this.

3 months agoThanks Scott for the lovely and thoughtful comments. Kyushu is an amazing cycling destination. Over our three trips to Kyushu we have covered a lot of territory, but there is so much more. And so many more surprises. While we were in Kagoshima this time, the volcano erupted. The plume of smoke and ash rose up over 9000 feet.
3 months agoWe also love the manhole covers. The Japanese have a way of making mundane things beautiful and fanciful. From cute road construction barriers to mascots, and everything in between, cycling in Japan is a wonderfully unique travel experience.
3 months agoBarry..I am so envious of how you can eat these sweets so often and yet, from the photos of yourself, you appear thinner! Oh, yeah..you are working it all off on your bike rides.. ;)
3 months agoOh.. I posted the previous comment too soon. Pink is probably for ❤️ and here’s a green one for the luck of the Irish..?
3 months agoResembles the British mailbox, don’t you agree?, yet slimmer. Not sure about why it’s the color pink, though.
3 months agoLooks like a conquistador helmet on the left and the tail end of the zeppelin on the right. Fun shapes and inquisitive designs :)
3 months agoLike that. I guess it should be our motto.

3 months agoI remember this wonderful path, which was here almost twenty years ago. Our experience here was similar to yours - we caught the ferry across the Inland Sea to Kitakyushu from Shimonoseki and then had a horrible time getting through Kitakyushu. We aimed for that big orange bridge also, but bikes weren’t allowed and there was no boat option we could find. We spent the next hour slogging through the city trying to find a different way to the coast.
And then this path. Wow.
This is a feature I really enjoyed from our tour also. I had my own gallery of favorite manholes from places like Imbari and Himeji and Tsuwano.

Yup. Definitely a black kite. I didn’t know they were found in Japan.
