Japan is the only place I’ve ever seen bikers with umbrellas. It was raining when we were in Hiroshima, and bikers would ride into a shopping mall with their umbrellas open and refurl and stow them away as they biked into the mall.
1 year agoWe biked across Osaka almost twenty years ago and remember it like this - except it was mostly riding on the sidewalks then, through a constant crush of pedestrians and bikers. It felt like we were living in an arcade game.
1 year agoHow handy is that?!
1 year agoMaybe for your return trip you can consider transporting the trikes like Sylvia does. Would be interested to hear if you do.

Sylvia used to post on that other site but years ago went her own way. She’s been all over the world with her trike. This article is a few years old and written before she got e-assist, but she’s still trucking.
Hi Jean-Marc
As you said, we have also enjoyed following your tours in Japan. Your experiences motivated us to follow our dream of cycle touring in Japan.
We are on our way to Vancouver airport tomorrow. It begins...

With regards to what there is to love about Japan, don't forget the onsens - the best way to end a long day in the saddle.
1 year agoHi Barry
I'll be following your tour with interest. We have really enjoyed both of the cycle tours of Japan that we have done (one of one month and the other covering the length of the four main islands over three months) and we plan to cycle tour Japan again within the next few years. It will be great to read of someone else's experiences and perspectives.
Regards
Jean-Marc
We plan to return to Japan in the Fall for another tour. The batteries will stay in Japan for when we return.
1 year agoAny plans for getting your new batteries back home?
1 year agoHere’s to trikers on the go!
1 year agoI look forward to following your travels! We really enjoyed our tour in Japan. Although we only saw 2 bicycle tourists near the end of our tour.
1 year agoGlad to hear you found such a great bike and it even comes with a cat!
1 year agoThat e-assist is great for ageing legs and the Rohloff is an excellent choice!
