I wonder if it stems from a culture where all rubbish was either biological or locally reusable/recyclable ? Plastic is such a blight . . .

I've probably told Ian that my father used to tell the story of a mob of 1,500 to 2,000 turkeys around Cowra in the 40s that were used to control saffron thistle. Apparently after you'd had them in there wouldn't be a single thistle come up the next year and the turkeys would be very fat. I've seen a photo of them walking over the Galari (Lachlan river) bridge in the middle of town.
