That is a naga, a river spirit. This one is extra protective of the Buddha. When you arrive at the Mekong, watch for swirls in the water, nagas live there.

I'm surprised that they didn't press the lao lao on you, that can be tricky because it's lethal weapons grade but one doesn't want to insult the host either.

Even in Luang Prabang you'll see tiny songbirds in the morning market, it's appalling. We have heard a few birds but only at night while camping in the middle of nowhere. It's really, really sad.

That is a khaen/kaen/khene/pick your spelling. It's part of the great Isaan/Lao musical genre and I hope you get to hear some of that.

Some species of impatiens. (there are hundreds!) Only Impatiens rubricolor seems to match this photo.
