Ian, aren't Plimsols things you wear on your feet?

No worries, you'll find plenty of phin coffee with sweetened condensed milk, just keep looking. Out in the sticks that's all you'll get. I love that the slow drip means you have to slow down as well. I'm enjoying your journal, guys, have a great trip!

Graham Smith commented on Ian, Day 2 - delayed flights but arrival in Old Town, Hanoi

Well done on arriving. When son Joe and I used China Southern a couple months ago we were delayed by about 8 hours and ended up in Singapore instead of Guangzhou.
And on a different airline.
Typhoon incident they said.

Re navigating;
last tour I fitted one of those clever Australian inventions, a Quadlock phone holder, to my handlebars.

Having the phone securely fastened to the bars turned out to be immensely useful when navigating in unfamiliar urban areas.

Those situations where frequent peering at the phone screen was required simultaneously with steering, braking and looking out for signage and landmarks.

Graham, yes, you're right. But it was a decent shortcut when lugging a pannier. Also, why not follow the cultural trail left by those who hang out near the airport? I've ridden the bikepath. They don't make finding the start easy. All easier on the return trip.

I’m a bit curious about why you needed to squeeze through a fence. There’s a bike path all the way from the International Terminal car park to Rowers Club and beyond.

The access to the airport end of the path isn’t well signed, but it’s tucked away on the upper level of the car park, just across the Departures entry/exit doors. Very close to where Murrays drop-off point is.

There’s also an undercover bike storage area in there too.

Graham Smith commented on Why Southeast Asia?

Hi Ian,

Isn’t the other reason for choosing Vietnam is that your extensive cycle touring experience in Indonesia has you missing heat, humidity, extreme hills and being overtaken by vehicles without mufflers?
