5 months agoI liked my night in Riggins. I lucked into a room at the Riggins Motel, a 1920s-vintange "motor court" with groups of rooms in small multi-unit buildings. A comfortable, welcoming, room with a bit of a rustic feel, a covered front porch, lovely grounds, guest-accessible laundry machine... just charming.
There is (or was? the owner was contemplating selling out and moving to Nepal or some such place) a wonderful little restaurant a couple doors down from the motel. Kate was really a delightful soul. She had an enormous tub of bing cherries from her orchard, and was pleased to hand them out to anyone who wanted some- she even had plastic bags to go with the fruit.
I have mixed memories of riding this route 12 years ago, also in a heat wave. We did the grade into Grangeville in 100 degree heat- you were smart to do it early in the day. We stayed in Grangeville then rode to Riggins the next day. A highlight was the Silver dollar Saloon in Whitebird, where we had lunch and met Sheryl, the bartender and cook, who then became a FarmVille buddie with my dad. The road to Riggins was hot, hot and hot and when we arrived at the RV park where we would camp, I went and sat in the river in my bike clothes for an hour. Good times đ Iâm glad that your experience was better.
As I remember, the day after Riggins was fantastic and very scenic.
Oof!
6 months agoI'm guessing these are Bureau of Land Management sites- I remember a lot of those along the rivers in that part of Idaho though I never stayed at them (no water available, that I was aware of).
6 months agoWell done! Brings back memories of my ride two years ago. I couldn't get a room at the White Bird Motel and ended up a couple miles short of it at an RV park. Had to ride into White Bird for dinner, which I remember as being not awful.
You were wise to avoid Lamb Grade coming out of Stites yesterday, 3+ miles at 12-15 percent. Brutal.
You made it to the top! Good for you!!
6 months agoNow you need to pair it with a V-8 for the ultimate taste sensation!
6 months agoMy day today was only "meh" in terms of the riding, but: I finally found the Nut Roll you write about!
It was definitely better than the Payday bars I've burned out on.
As I was riding this today, my vague memories werenât lining up with the ride. I remember the downhill as going on forever and ever and I just wanted it to end. I did not feel that way today!
6 months agoI think Jacinto feels like the mismatched cranks are a badge of honor. What a souvenir of the trip!
6 months agoGreat cranks!
6 months agoLook at all that geology. We need Emily Sharp to tell us whatâs going on.
6 months agoIt's been 9 years but I definitely remember White Bird hill! I was going the opposite direction from you, though - you had an easier climb going your way. The White Bird Motel used to be a cash-only operation, and the same for the other businesses in town - but that was 9 years ago. The ride to Riggins will be a gentle ride along the river once you climb out of the immediate valley. Day 50 and 51 of my Transam journal (https://www.cycleblaze.com/journals/buddy/) may be of some interest.

The right two look ok but for a couple specks... I've had worse! :-) But then I was truly starving.
