Thanks for bringing my attention back to this tour. It really is an astonishing place.
2 years agoI wouldn’t go quite that far, but it is a pretty wonderful place alright. We had a wonderful time and keep talking up a longer revisit one of these winters. Not this one, which is already spoken for, but maybe the next.
2 years agoGoogle Image Search is a thing? I’ve never noticed. I do make regular use of Wikipedia though, which tells us those are the same colorful bird: “ The Java sparrow, also known as Java finch, Java rice sparrow or Java rice bird, is a small passerine bird.”

She might almost pass as Rachel's sister.

2 years agoVisiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for the first time, I was struck by the near-lunar starkness of the lava flows. The only green were a few small offerings to the gods placed by natives.
Then, passing from the lee to the windward side in the space of a quarter mile, we were in a tropical rainforest. What an amazing transition, just by crossing a ridge line.
Your long wait is over: Google's image search claims it's river tamarind (Leucaena leucocephala (Leucaena)).

In some areas it's an invasive species (http://www.iucngisd.org/gisd/species.php?sc=23)
I think Hawaii may be my favorite place on the planet.
2 years agoI think my wife took a photo of me under that very same tree, back in 2010. I'll see it again in a couple months when we're back for a walking tour in early January 2023.
2 years agoIt is eucalyptus. Non-native.

Yup. On the Google home page, the icon to the right of the microphone in the search box launches the search-by-image ("Google Lens") feature. You can paste, drag, or upload an image or paste the URL of an image already on the web. It's a really cool thing, and just barely hints at the immense power and cleverness that Google has at its command.
