Is he attempting to put sunglasses on while riding? ( it is obvious his hands are not on the handlebars). But, then, he IS wearing a helmet; not like most kids who have them dangling on the handlebars..Good for him!

It's more that whoever installed the newer better stone didn't care enough to leave the original readable

That is true too, but the main reasons are due to polished surfaces and non-angular interlocking shapes.

Ocean sand, being polished by wave action has less surface imperfections for the cement to adhere, resulting in far weaker concrete. Critical if used in building beams, bridges, etc.
