Wish I'd been there to sound the gong to send you off!

Perhaps upon your return?

Somehow this looks exactly like your first draft. Or am I confused?

Wow, an interesting routing. Like Jacquie, we will be watching for what parts we can "steal" for future tours.

Most of these are on the plan. We’ll circle north and east of Bath with stays at Malmesbury, Marlborough and Salisbury. Avebury and Stonehenge are definitely in. I do wonder though if there’s some not so subtle message in everyone insisting I need a Bath in my future.

I have fond memories of Bath, Avebury, Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral and the Magna Carta - all part of a short tour through Wiltshire/Salisbury Plain a few years ago. Just saying.

Aw come on! You've got to go to Bath, if only for me! That's where this whole bike touring thing started for me. Way back in May '82 a few weeks after graduating from University and after partying in London with a few of my school mates to work off the jet lag, I ended up in Bath and found Johns Bikes. I bought a British racing green Elswick Stag 10 speed, strapped on my Kirkland panniers and took off without a care, or a clue, for a 4 month voyage of discovery around Europe. Sadly, I just Googled Johns Bikes and is closed in 2018, but Bath still has a soft spot in my heart.
Look forward to following your England - Wales section. Having lived in the UK for ~ 8 years (but 20 years ago) the thought of touring in England in particular has always caused me concern given the roads and traffic. I believe they've done a lot to add cycling infrastructure since then and I'm sure you've fully researched your route. Keenly interested to see how it goes! Safe travels.

I'm based in Durham, in north-east England, which your route very carefully swerves! (I don't blame you: Durham itself is great, but the scenery in the North Pennines and N. Yorks is, I have to concede, better. But if your route changes to bring you further east, I will gladly provide advice on cake stops, pubs, and other essentials...)

Hi, Polly. Thanks again for following along, and thanks for the tip. I hadn’t heard of cycle.travel before but it looks like an excellent resource. I’ll have to study it and compare its recommendations to our own plans.

So are you based in the UK, btw? Will we be passing anywhere near you?
