"Indeed no bike dwarfs the inconvenience of lost luggage and Garmin." ??? What was I trying to say? "Having no bike ..." I guess.
2 years agoHi Scott. I agree with the comments that there is nothing propriety about Bike Friday rear derailleurs. You can go with any long cage 11 speed derailleur. Hopefully, your derailleur hanger is not cracked or bent. (OR even worse, that the bike frame itself where the derailleur hanger attaches is not broken or bent). Make sure the mechanics check that. Good luck and I hope you are back on the road soon.
2 years agoAnd you'd be all set for the Kentucky Derby!
2 years agoEven faster than I could react to the bad news of your derailleur, it looks like a solution to the problem has been found. Indeed no bike dwarfs the inconvenience of lost luggage and Garmin. But I suspected from your creative problem solving in the past, it would only be a matter of time before you are again on the road. Fingers crossed!

2 years agoI don’t mind some wind but when 15 miles an hour winds are the norm and winds 25 plus are not unusual that’s too much!
2 years agoI will second comments about there being nothing proprietary. Ultegra is the road group set so any shimano or shimano compatible 11sp road derailleur will work as long as it has similar capacity to the ultegra 8000. My bikes all run 9sp so I’m not familiar with 11sp parts, but the shop should be and 11sp is more common right now than 9sp. Fingers crossed they’ll have you up and running tomorrow.
2 years agoYou've probably figured out that the French are pretty chauvinistic about the towns they live in. Nowhere else could possibly be as good a place to live as the town that French person lives in. So take those criticisms with a grain of salt. You probably want to do your own research.
Nonetheless, we're preparing to wine you and dine you to convince you that Limoux is really where you want to be. IMHO, it's really the best town to live in. But maybe I'm starting to pick up some of the attributes of the French after living among them for so many years. A scary thought...
It sounds like the helpful bike shop guy is the one to trust, and that other bike shop is to be avoided. I bet you're on the road tomorrow. If not, we're here to help. If Robin's mom was right, this is the last thing that will go wrong. Good that you got it over with quickly!
2 years agoOh, we’ll be back. We plan to spend several days there in the fall on the way back south. It’s a great place, except for the wind.
2 years agoDarn - I was looking forward to your take on Narbonne. Remember you’re not going to live there but just “blow” through.
2 years agoGood taste! I was going to tell you that you should come back and see Sommieres again when it’s dry.
2 years agoHey, another breakfast room we recognize from our tour in November 2011. It was pouring rain when we were there however. Al recalls your bike path toward Nimes starting right outside the hotel. (We went the other way to Montpellier.)
2 years agoThank you for allowing me to look up 'heuristic' on my own.

Thanks for the clarification! I did puzzle over that one a bit. And you’re right - the other two issues feel like nits. It reminds me of the time we arrived in Innsbruck for a 3week vacation and the airlines lost our bikes for three days.
