Because it is several hundred more miles and I suspect some big mountain passes further than San Diego. I don't think I have that in me.

Have you tried squirting a dog with your water bottle? I have carried a small boat horn but have not had an opportunity to test it on the bike. A large dog latched on to my rear deraileur cable for a few seconds while riding in Mississippi.
