I think that might be Maxwell Smart--Agent 86--under the Cone of Silence. (Ancient pop culture reference)

That makes sense. I was also thinking possibly some sort of natural pesticide (the kind where you introduce the right sort of bug to eat the wrong sort)

Yeah, that about sums up my feeling

Looks like a giant silkworm cocoon... Possibly eaten by humans and tacked to trees as some kind of insecticide holder?

Trust me, I am not patient. It's one of the reasons that I jump so quickly to yelling at people (that, and yelling working where being polite didn't).

I was going to comment on your apparent infinite patience - it seems you are human after all 😃. Sorry for all the challenges you're facing, hopefully Beijing will be less Kafkaesque!

Hi great to see you are on the road again. Keep it up. With Shanghai opening up now and you on the road, hopefully things lighten up going forward.

The guy was obviously looking for a “just getting into cycling but with a bike that gives me a lot of face..” bike. Amazes me these days the people willing to spend that much money without even the knowledge of how to change a flat!

Oh dear, not a very smooth start... Fingers crossed for fewer bumps going forward!

Thanks - very interesting! I'm no expert but like learning little bits and pieces about China. Hopefully tourists will be let back in unmolested at some point...!

Most people don't keep pushing on topics that they know I'm going to have a different opinion on after I've said we shouldn't have this discussion.

The most anti-Party rhetoric people I know are senior Party members; the ones likely to say things (privately, to me) about China's behavior being an embarrassment are senior officials.

I knew, even before it came out, that the author of last year's book was someone important on the grounds that he was publicly writing that the June 4 Incident was a horrible tragedy caused by an over reaction by the government...... and this book was being translated by a central government publishing house.
