Thanks Jacquie! I haven't heard of trangia stoves since my backpacking days 16 years ago. I try to use paint thinner (denatured alcohol) as it burns clean and hot. I will keep in mind about fondue fuel. That's a good idea. I also was told by a local that while the pharmacies like CVS and Walgreen are sold out of the 93% rubbing alcohol and only have 70% dollar general tends to stock the 93% as well. Probably at a cheaper price point as well.
4 years agoHi Aunt Cindy - Nashville is so much fun. If you like country music or even have an appreciation for it there is a ton to do in the music city.
4 years agoAh, yes, I almost forgot you guys went to Mammoth cave as well. I loved Nashville.
4 years agoThanks Sharon! I was in Columbia today getting my wheel repaired. It's a small world but no so small riding a bike. :)
4 years agoHey Dave
Enjoying your daily journals. I would love to go to Nashville via car or airplane one day. Grandma had a girls trip to Nashville in her late 60s early 70s. Enjoy every minute of your trip.
Hi Dave, it is so funny seeing that you are on the same path we were! We had our picture taken with Elvis and also the Legends mural! AND we spent the night in Franklin, TN a very charming historical town. Too bad we were just a few days ahead of you. From there we headed home so you are on your own to Bama! Looking forward to the rest or your journey!
4 years agoJust realized I spelled Maury County incorrectly. Maury not Murray.
Columbia also home town of President Polk.
Believe you can your his house.
But I know that's time and $.
Be safe
Hi Dave. Its Sharon Hendrickson from Zeeland. Your mom told me about this journal and Tom and I are really enjoying "traveling" with you each day. I see you are in Spring Hill . About 45 yrs ago I lived in Columbia, TN which I think is the next town to the south. The only thing I remember about Spring Hill is that it had a large pet cemetery, I believe. There also was a commune near Columbia. My youngest son was born in the Murray County Hospital in Columbia. Columbia was famous for it's mules and celebrated them with Mule Days which I think was in the Spring
Also some historic buildings in Columbia, but I can't remember the significance.
We will continue to enjoy reading your journal. Safe travels
You might find this article useful though I admit it's Canada-specific: https://www.canadianoutdoorequipment.com/expert-advice/gear-equipment/fuels-for-trangia-alcohol-stoves.html
4 years agoIn Canada, I buy "methyl hydrate" for my Trangia (alcohol) stove. This can be found disguised as "fondue fuel" but the price is better in the paint department(!) of big-box stores like Canadian Tire or Home Depot. It seems it's also used as paint thinner...
4 years agoHard to beat unexpected live music! Sounds like a great camping adventure!
4 years agoIts fun to read your comments because we were JUST at Mammoth Cave. We did not do the cave tour either but enjoyed a few hikes and learning a bit of the history, the best being about Floyd Collins and his untimely death in 1926. Google it in case you did not hear of him. I think you will find it interesting as we did! I was not biking like you but also noticed the poor road shoulders for bikers....but thought the roads looked like great fun on a bike, so twisty but maybe a bit too hilly.

4 years agoYes, indeed it was Jacquie. Another factor however that I didn't mention in my entry was that due to covid19 they were only doing the most basic tours this year. No, crawling around in tight spaces this year. Lol

Cool, thanks!
