I know. I was thrilled with it. Usually we see nests from below, with at most a bit of a head peeking out.

Really lucky. It just caught the corner of my eye. It would have been better if I had my wits about me though because the splash Pallone was much larger. At first I thought it was a waterfall so I felt no rush in pulling out the zoom.

Yup. I often wonder if it’s worth carrying around, because I almost never use it because the image quality isn’t as good. Every so often though it’s the only tool for the job.

Looks like good ol' fireweed. Chamaenerion angustifolium likes recently disturbed soils, such as recent fires, roadworks, or receding glaciers.

Pretty sure they’re from fire; although the beetles might have gotten there first and set the stage.
