Keith Klein commented on a photo in Feelin’ the blues

Hi Scott,

Why is the style called Queen Anne? As near as I can make out, she died before there was a United States, let alone Oregon.

Cheers,
Keith

Oh, for goodness sake. I’ve never heard of checkerblooms. Really an attractive flower. Thanks!

I can understand your squeamishness. I decided against seeing Dunkirk myself. You’d be fine with this film though - it isn’t really a war film, but just set in wartime. All the action takes place back on the farm.

Les guardiennes was one of the offerings on Air Transat as we flew Amsterdam to Vancouver. But after all the time spent on the Sommes and near Ypres I found I wasn't up to watching beyond the first few minutes. I also avoided Dunkirk on the same flight. Wimpy.

Might be Oregon checkerbloom... If my internet searching led me correctly.

Funny you should mention that, Mike. A funny thing happened today - I downloaded a photo from the net to my iPad, and it was spoiled in the same way. I think it may be an iPad problem or the photo application, and not the camera. If it happens again when I extract from the camera, I think I’ll try clearing the download out and trying again.

It appears that you have solved your camera problem!

Oh. I thought it was available on the website for some reason, but I guess not. Scoandpdx@gmail.com

Thank you for the sunglasses info. If you let me know how to access your email address, I'll be happy to send you our phone number. (I'd rather not post it here publicly.) We'll look forward to meeting both of you on August 3.

That would be amazing. We’d love that. We’ll put it on our calendar, and plan to be available by 5. We have a reasonably short day then (from Trail, via Castlegar) so we shouldn’t have any trouble being in town in time. Any place you suggest as a venue is fine with us (as long as it serves beer or wine).

Could you send me an email with your phone number, so we can reach you in case something comes up at the last minute?

Also, back on Rachael’s glasses. They’re Oakley Flak sunglass frames, with prescription lenses.

If we meet on August 3, our friends and fellow Bike Friday riders, the Perrins, could join us for dinner. I believe you have corresponded with Roland a few times in the last year or so. They have recently returned from a six week tour in Greece, so you might enjoy comparing notes.

Great stories of lost things! I find as I get older, habit replaces memory, like: always place your cycling gloves and sun glasses next to your handlebar bag when you return home. It seems in your new life as nomads, you don't have many habits to rely on.

I’m sure a more balanced person could shoot this thing one-handed, but unfortunately I’ve got a two-handed Bike Friday. I’m pretty sure that if I started taking shots while biking we’d be looking at a string of broken cameras and/or teeth.

3X zoom. If I need more than that (uncommon), I also usually carry a ZS50 superzoom. Yes, you can manually adjust focus, but I don’t. I’m strictly a PHD photographer, having learned from experience that the computer is much smarter than I am. Maybe when we quit spending so much time on the road I could take a class? Also though, using anything other than the automated settings would slow me/us down even more, and Rachael would flip out. She thinks I take way too much time already.

Plenty to laugh at, alright. I try to regularly serve myself fresh material to keep my skills sharp.

Ah yes, HDR. My little Nikon Coolpix S7000 uses this under the guise of backlight compensation. It does mostly work, though the Coolpix only takes two exposures. My main bugaboo has been what I would call flare, coming in from church windows. I have tended to blame uncoated, cheap lenses, but the HDR has made things tolerable.

Th Coolpix is about the biggest I think I would be comfortable with, since I ride with the camera in my safety vest shirt pocket and shoot a lot on the fly. It requires one handed operation of on/off and zoom. The LX-10 looks like it could do that too?

Clearly from your photo the LX-10 supports aperture priority. Can you manually focus too? Also it looks like the max aperture is 2 - not bad! What is the number of times of zoom?

By the way, Dodie often is not too impressed by my shots. Her mantra is "why can't you shoot like Scott Anderson?"
