Thankfully France is not Australia with your heat, so I expect that most of the time I will be less prone to difficulty than you. That said, EVERYBODY should be aware of the effects of heat stroke. I should have known better, and I will be more vigilant from now on. If I had been wiser, I would have remembered that high temperature need to be taken seriously. You know what "they" say: experience is what you get just after you really needed it.

Hi Keith - I've really enjoyed your journal. The Roman history really fascinates me and I'd love to link a bunch of those sites together one day. I am glad you recovered from the heat enough to continue. I had a very scary experience with heat exhaustion, and gave my husband a huge fright, in 2003. I was lucky not to have cooked some organs that day. It has made me super-aware of staying cool and taking precautions ever since. So I can totally empathise with your experience. I look forward to following more of your meandering in journals to come :-) All the best.

I missed Susan by one day. So almost, but not quite. The funny thing is that the heat didn't last as long as predicted, but still I'm not sad to be home. There were a few things I had to do here, and I will get back on the road as time permits.

Sorry your tour ended due to the heat, but once again I enjoyed following along on your sojourn through the French countryside. Hope you get out again sometime while the weather is non-freezing. Also, I was reading Susan Carpenter's tour too and thinking, hey isn't Keith in the neighborhood? Too bad we didn't have crossover journal entries for that.
6 years agoWise decision I would say. We, meanwhile, are still trying to warm up here in northern Holland. The weather has been cool and off and on spitting rain. Still better than excessive heat.

I feel a lot better and I'm doing all I can to stay hydrated. The only drawback is getting up four times a night for bathroom breaks. Is it age, or is it intake? Who knows, and considering the alternative, who cares!

The French system is about as painless as any hospital system could be. With the all-important card the doc has immediate access to your medical records and the fact that everybody MUST have their own doctor to coordinate their care means the ER's are for true emergencies (see text). But still, nobody in their right mind would want to be in the ER, unless of course they work there.
I still haven't made up my mind about the rest of the tour, but I suspect I'll carry on for a few days at least.

5 years agoThanks for reading. He short answer is no, I don’t have a route map. I don’t use a GPS , being an unrepentant Luddite, and my paper map has long since given up the struggle against my constant folding and unfolding. There is hope, however. My route roughly follows EuroVelo 1 most of the way and there are maps galore available, both paper and on line. Going south from La Roche sur Yon, I was mostly on small D-roads with their general idea of reaching the coast. And I was mostly lost, but made it to my goal eventually.
