Yup... as many decades as I have been around them unafraid, they are still creepy... But fun to toss a bug into the web and watch it spin the victim, covering it with silk, to become dinner.

Thanks Bill! I’m glad to know they’re not harmful. They’re still awfully big. 😳

Those spiders are likely garden orb weavers and are relatively harmless.

That’s steep! It must have been awful without a granny gear.

Hi Graham-

I have a favour to ask - could you please do an internet search for a SRAM S700 10 speed shifter available here in Taiwan? Mine is in need of replacement. I can find lots in Canada online, but being illiterate in Chinese makes searching here tough.

The local Giant mechanic at Sun Moon Lake says Giant shops won’t have them because all their bikes with mechanical shifting use Shimano parts.

Thanks!

You can bring back the crystals. Pocari Sweat is the best!

I think all those 7-11 are now Quebec owned. Good on you for shopping Canadian.

Really enjoying your journal Betsy. I was meant to be in Taiwan myself, setting off on the same day as you but I'm at home in the UK tending for a partner with a broken leg. So it's a vicarious pleasure to follow you and get tips for a trip next year. Love all the food details as well as the route.
Thank you!

I'm sure the road (Highway 8) has been opened, but the hiking trails are still closed.

It would be possible to go south-ish from Lishan where the 7 merges with Highway 8.

I’m not sure if route 7 is open - it might be. But it looks like a very big climb! Route 8 is definitely closed.

I read that Taroko Gorge is closed? Can you get to the east coast via route 7 now?

I thought these were ice cream trucks at first too. I’ve never seen this model of trash collection before, which depends on people being home at the right time.
