The good news is that I don’t think I made any routing ‘mistakes’. 😀
From other trip reports here and elsewhere, I knew Route 1 would be busy. I saw what I wanted to, and generally spent as little time on Route 1 as possible in doing so. If/when I return, I’d love to see different places. Taiwan is a lovely place to ride a bike!

Many visitors make the mistake of cycling Route 1. If you return, try the mountains. The climbs are usually long, but with decent gears very doable.

I’m so glad this worked out for you, Betsy. We found it to be an outstanding destination too, and we’re also impressed by how generous and friendly people were everywhere we went. And like you, we found the best rides and the most interesting country on quieter roads back in the hills away from Route 1.

A great journal! Your enthusiasm made me want very much to cycle in Taiwan.

Sounds like a really successful tour, with in general exceptional weather. I was sorry you didn’t make it around the southern tip because I’d like to have seen your photos of it, but no doubt it was the wise decision. Thanks for taking us along!

Congratulations! We really liked Taipei and New Taipei. They have an amazing number of great cycling paths!

Yes, I think I’ve been very lucky with the weather at the north end of Taiwan. It rained here almost every day for the first three weeks of my trip. I figured I’d just take a train to end the trip if it was still wet up here. Today was another nice one.

Wow, I am so envious! I want to go back and have your weather on the east side.

I love tunnels that are only for cyclists or walkers!

The leaves do look much like Taro.
