The dark gray stone, coupled with the tiny window near the door and the window bars above, give that place a brooding, vaguely menacing fortress-like look.
2 years agoThat stonework looks almost like cinder block. Technically, I suppose basalt and basaltic volcanic ash practically *are* cinder block, aren't they?
2 years agoIf only you had thought to photograph other windows, for easy comparison and contrast.
2 years agoDark basalt is such a contrast to the light-colored limestone used in so many places. Gives the place a bit of a brooding character even on a sunny day.

Good habitat for small songbirds, maybe? But you're right: not terribly visually inspiring. Then again, not everyplace can or should offer breathtakingly stunning vistas: *someone* has to live the workaday life, after all, if only to provide the contrast that makes other places so compelling.

2 years agoIt cost nothing to try, and that's good because I got no return on the investment. Google produced numerous images similar in composition and color but none from France.
However if you're interested in the geology of Russia, Rajasthan, or certain wine-producing regions in Austria I can help you out. No? How about soil types and stratification in various areas? Still no?
