Sad news. Most impressed with the Rohloff on my Thorn Nomad. Classic German engineering with that slightly noisy 7th gear as a reference point. I still have the cog from my 2011 trip - 19,000 km, 1 cog, 1 chain. Cogs are reversible so when the teeth bend you reverse the cog. My cog ended up with needle teeth that would suit a piranha.

Hi Ian
Breaking news on the Thorn bikes forum (and here on the CB forum) which might interest you. I quote:

“Rohloff-related Facebook groups are reporting the sad passing of Bernhard Rohloff, "father" of our beloved Speedhubs.

His family and "family" of employees must all be gutted and the magnitude of his loss will ripple through the entire industry.

Condolences to his loved ones and a final thanks to him for providing such joy to those of us who have used and enjoyed his inventions.

Godspeed, Bernie.“

Hi Jackie and thanks,

I’ve also done a bit of recent cross-promoting of Ian’s very interesting journal via FB, and on the Thorn Bicycle Forum, and here on the CB forum. I’m sure the readership will grow considerably as the journey progresses.

Given Ian’s latest reptile exploits, there’d be interest from the ACT Herpetology Society too, but I don’t know how to reach them.:)

Ian it’s Reconciliation Day long weekend here in one of the other Territories that Paul Hasluck was Minister of when he unveiled that very badly worded plaque in 1960.

That text really does need a complete re-write.
Victory Creek should be the new name.

John. Good on you. Couldn't agree more. Twenty years ago I was talking to med students in Darwin and I said that if I could sign a paper stating that there would be absolute equality in 50 years then I would jump on it. They were horrified!

Well said Graham, I know that I am enthralled by Ian's journey, and the words and images he uses to share it. I know that each week when I share a condensed version of Ian's week on our indigo Facebook page, the number of people who are engaging with it and sending him messages of support increase. Last weeks one saw over 340 likes and shares.

Nope. Not offended. I'm kinda hard to offend... I have stories... and nicknames, many of which are offensive enough that I will not use them.

Places like Tennant Creek make me despair at the society we've created . There's so much that needs to change (starting with attitudes). Bloody hell I hope this referendum gets up and the body created is able to be heard !

Nice work Wal ! I hope the snake appreciated what you did for it and wasn't looking for blood when you let go of its head

Great to hear from you again. I thought that I may have offended you with my last reply and I can assure you all was in jest. I had a vision of Bill making his python nicks!
