Hard to imagine...
1 year agoBill, so why not just eat a banana? You could get 40 for the price of that boring durian. If I could find a durian that smelt like my tropical socks I would sleep with it. Ian
1 year agoA missionary friend in Thailand claims the variety they have locally is really good and does not smell like dirty socks.
1 year agoBill, good on you. I don't think I ever tried. Mind you, I would have done if I'd seen someone do it when I was young. Ian
1 year agoWell done, Graham!
1 year agoBill, good hearing from you. When you hear something like that, you just have to try one, don't you? I have a picture of me lying on a bed in a guesthouse, durian on the pillow. The room stank when we came back. That was an entire durian; you can't imagine they smell before being cut, but they do. Ian
1 year agoAnother day, another island.
It seems like only yesterday you were on a different island.
You are archipedaling the archipelago at an eruptive pace.
I've heard tales... Heard you love or hate it, and also heard it depends on the variety. Never had the opportunity to try it.
1 year agoSomething you don't often see! I used to climb trees like that. Joints won't allow it any more though. Tough getting old.
1 year agoThanks Daisy for all of that information. Ian
1 year agoIt is bawang merah (Allium ascalonicum L.). In the US, it is called shallots. But Australian shallot is a different species of allium.
Bawang merah is the main seasoning in most Indonesian dishes. It can be ground with garlic, chilies, corriander, etc.; fried, or eaten raw as part of fresh pickle.
The green eggplant is terong gelatik. It is named after gelatik bird (sparrow).
1 year agoKepok banana. It is a hybrid from Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. Good to eat fresh, boiled into dessert drinks (with or without coconut milk), steamed, fried or cooked into rice cake.
1 year agoJohn, isn't wattle day August 1!!!!
