Yep that looks pretty ratty. Not conducive to pleasant, relaxed riding.
2 years agoGood on Raton. We would have chosen that route as well. We've dealt with the wind east of Trinidad and it can be very strong. Hopefully the rain won't make your riding miserable. But is the wildfire still an issue?
2 years agoRain in New Mexico, deep blue skies in England... yup, crazy weather.
Kelly, good luck to you! None of the conditions you mention sound appealing for riding, *at all*. You're a hardy soul!
The weather’s really gone crazy everywhere. I think that’s just the way it’s going to be now, and you really need to plan for flexibility. Good luck with the rain!
2 years agoResponding to your previous message about 42 miles being your own number. I know. You picked a good number. Not too big, not too small. Attainable on a daily basis. It's a number that really adds up! Our average for the trip is 46 daily miles.
I wanted to revisit all of my old favorites on this trip. Maybe I didn't quite think through that I live in Colorado and it's necessary to climb here! The current big obstacle is the wind. I've tried to tamp down my wind commentary the past couple of days. It does consume our thoughts and conversations though.
No wonder you’re tired. You’ve been doing a lot of climbing and miles!
2 years agoMaybe a church got it from the RR after it fell into disuse?
2 years agoI’m not looking forward to getting up the steep block to the main road! I’m going to walk it.
If we had stayed in LaVeta and then Trinidad, it would have been a 65 mile day with a lot of climbing.
Stonewall has cabins, but the food was terrible when we stayed there last time.
We will see if the choice of Curchara was a happy medium.
Breakfast in 15!
I know we would have stopped in La Veta as doing the pass right out of the gate in the morning would have been too hard for us. You have a different route than I expected ahead of you, so I'll be interested to read how it goes and where you stayed.
2 years agoGlad to hear he got it fixed! I had that happen to me once but I only had about a mile to go!
2 years agoThe top line is maybe a name, which I couldn’t make out either. Second line says “Blacksmithing and Repairing.” I believe. Pretty cool.
2 years agoWhen we rode through here in 2017, I had a flat tire in the canyon. This trip it was my entertainment, trying to find the wide spot with a rock where I sat to fix it.
This was definitely a better ride. I was really happy with the lack of big vehicles.
I went back and added clarification. Walsenburg is next to the interstate, not tiny little Westcliffe.
2 years agoClose to the Interstate in Westcliffe? I suppose you mean close to the 2-lane US highway.

Paved roads are open in NM, but forest roads are closed. The Great Divide riders are routing around onto paved roads.
2 years agoIt is raining here right now. The motel clerk says this is the first rain they've had in forever. It's supposed to clear up by morning, with chances again in the afternoon. Tomorrow we have what should be a nice, cruising ride - 40 miles. 1,300 feet of climbing. We shall see how it goes!
