Bike shop tales like this just make me cringe, but it makes for a good story anyway. Good luck!
2 years agoSome species of Penstemon (about 15 in that area). Possibly Rocky Mountain Penstemon.

It’s a well-known fact that hills get steeper every year.
2 years agoI’m thinking of you guys daily. You are going to have a DILLY of a post-tour depression when you get home. Unless, dear Kelly, you’ve become the bicycle version of the Flying Dutchman!

Don and I went to college in Alamosa, and have since ridden in the valley a number of times on the tandem. I remember in college, a girlfriend and I rode our bikes to Monte Vista. We were so tired that we ended up calling the dorm mother to come pick us up. She was NOT happy about doing that! Even though I'm much older, I'm a stronger rider now than back in those days and probably could easily make the round trip.
2 years agoGlad you got an easy day. Hope it goes well tomorrow!
2 years agoThere are a couple of nearby places here that offer rail biking. I have never done it but have cycling friends that enjoyed it quite a bit as a novelty.
2 years agoI asked him why he didn't stop right there on top of the bridge - make sure that he gets right to the source! He just laughed.
2 years agoYou must not have been the only one, the railroad tracks are all paved over now. The road bike rider we spoke to said that he saw a three wheeled motorcycle bounce going over those tracks so hard that it ended up in the other lane!
2 years agoOne of my favorite routes of all time: Kelly and Jacinto’s “Slumgullion” tour! But I had an ouchie on those RR tracks just south of Lake City.

Curious as to where Oren obtained his information. I’d want to see some documentation.
2 years agoNot a serious fan, but I do like a pretty old locomotive when I come across one. I knew of the one in Glacier, but we’ve never slept there or anywhere on a train. The closest experience we came to was on our honeymoon, sleeping on a tugboat B&B biking on Orcas Island in the San Juans. We were both surprised to find that it had bunk beds, not the ideal arrangement on a honeymoon. We crammed mattresses on the floor and made do. Or made whoop-di-doo.
2 years agoI did not know you are a train aficionado! We've seen several sidelined trains in this area. I would have taken photos if I'd known someone was interested.
Have you ever stayed in lodging that was formerly a train?
In Essex, MT - there is the very deluxe Isaak Walton Inn. That is near Glacier Park. I researched it, but we did not stay there.
We did stay in a caboose once - $20. a bed. It was quite an experience. Jacinto and Oren won't let me live it down!
They definitely have the shape of sandhill cranes, but the coloring is most unusual for that species.
