Hey George. I did the ride when I did the Western Express east to west in 2013.
Today I did it in the opposite direction, although I went all the way to the border, not Baker.
The ride seemed easier today than in 2013, for some reason. Maybe the climbing is easier west to east?
Thanks, Babs. I'm actually slightly obsessed with the lemon lime Gatorade now. I don't think I'd ever had that flavor before, somehow!
6 months agoGreat stories Jeff! You are guided by angels. That’s amazing! Now I’m thirsty for a lemon lime Gatorade!! You are doing great!!
6 months agoI've ridden Ely to Baker, it can be an enjoyable ride. Kerouac restaurant in Baker was good. https://www.cycleblaze.com/journals/heartattack/day-15-ely-to-baker-another-no-service-day/
6 months agoWhat did I say? About people stopping to offer you all kinds of goodies along the 170 empty miles of US 6. Sounds like you had quite a few great encounters.
6 months agoMaybe you should've pedaled up that embankment a foot or so. :-)
6 months agoWas there actually a building anywhere near this? Or for a few miles down a side road? It looks so barren.
6 months agoWow, a badger!
6 months agoBad, bad badger! :-)

6 months agoJeff, it's WORLD FAMOUS.
6 months agoHaha. I detest pickles, while my wife loves them. It's one of our jokey "feuds" in fact. I said something mean to her one time, and my punishment was that I had to drink pickle juice while she watched and laughed at my disgusted expression.
She must not have read this journal page yet, because we talked 20 minutes ago, and she didn't mention the photo.
You are probably already in Ely, soaking up all of the amenities of town. My mother owned the movie theatre there until she passed. It's a former opera house. When she bought it, the place was still heated with coal! Mother upgraded to coal oil, the most modern choice available in Ely. No gas service for heaters available. That place was a money pit. There was always something to fix or upgrade. But, it's sure a beautiful building.

Yeah, I was fortunate those people helped me.
6 months agoI have to say, that section of US-6 was tough. Like literally twice as hard as that 84 mile day between Milford and Baker on the Western Express. That was my previous benchmark for hard paved road touring.
